Applied Physicist - ATLAS Muon LS3 Integration and Installation Manager
CERN · Tills vidare · Deadline 2026-10-25
CERN is recruiting an **Applied Physicist - ATLAS Muon LS3 Integration and Installation Manager** for a 54-month contract starting in January 2027. Based **fully onsite** with an expected start date of 1 January 2027, the role coordinates the integration, installation, and maintenance activities for the ATLAS Muon detector upgrades during Long Shutdown 3 (2026–2030). Working as the primary liaison between Muon sub-projects and ATLAS Technical Coordination, responsibilities include maintaining the integrated LS3 schedule, resolving interface and resource conflicts, tracking progress, and directly overseeing technical interventions in the UX15 cavern and P1 site. The position entails work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, potential work during nights, Sundays, or official holidays, and requires obtaining medical clearance before contract confirmation due to occupational hazards such as electromagnetic field exposure. Applicants must hold a **PhD or equivalent relevant experience** in physics or a related field. Proven experience coordinating activities for large-scale detector systems or comparable scientific installations is required, alongside demonstrated experience planning and managing technical work involving multiple multidisciplinary teams and safety-related infrastructure. Candidates must have a valid driving licence and strong communication skills in spoken and written English, accompanied by a commitment to learn French. Familiarity with installation, integration, commissioning, or maintenance in large scientific facilities is considered an asset.
What you'll do:
As ATLAS Muon LS3 Integration and Installation Manager you will play a key role in the preparation and execution of activities during Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). You will be responsible for ensuring effective coordination across all ATLAS Muon sub-projects. You will closely follow daily work at P1 for Muon upgrade and maintenance projects, monitor progress, and take action to keep Muon activities on schedule. The role requires close collaboration with various ATLAS Muon sub-projects, ATLAS Technical Coordination (TC), and other relevant CERN groups. You will serve as the primary interface between the Muon projects and ATLAS TC, ensuring coherent planning, efficient execution, and comprehensive reporting of all activities.
During Long Shutdown 3 (LS3, 2026-2030), the ATLAS Muon detector will undergo significant upgrades, including the installation of new detector systems and extensive maintenance of existing detector components. As the ATLAS Muon LS3 Integration and Installation Manager, you will play a central role in planning, coordinating, and monitoring these activities.

Your profile:
- Proven experience in coordinating activities for large-scale detector systems or comparable complex scientific installations.
- Demonstrated experience in planning and managing work program involving multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated experience coordinating complex technical projects, managing competing priorities, and resolving planning, scheduling, and resource constraints in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Experience with safety systems and safety-related technical infrastructure.
- Familiarity with installation, integration, commissioning, or maintenance activities in large scientific facilities is considered an asset.
- PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Physics or a related field.
Your skills:
- Assembly and integration of detectors.
- Knowledge and application of gas based particle detection technologies.
- Testing and validation of detector, accelerator and beam line components.
