Applied Physicist/Engineer - ATLAS ITk Integration

CERN · Tills vidare · Deadline 2026-11-08

CERN is recruiting an **Applied Physicist/Engineer - ATLAS ITk Integration** for a 54-month, fully on-site contract with an intended start date of 1 January 2027. Joining the ATLAS Tracker section, the role focuses on synchronising the integration testing, surface assembly, and commissioning of the silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). Responsibilities include hands-on testing and verification of Strip Barrel and Endcap structures in the SR1 surface facility and cleanroom, collaborating closely with external institute sites such as DESY and NIKHEF, and developing both DAQ/online software and hardware for integration tests. Working conditions involve duties in radiation areas and **underground installations**, occasional work during nights, Sundays, and holidays, and a requirement to hold a valid driving licence. Applicants must hold a **master's degree, PhD, or equivalent relevant experience** in applied physics, engineering, or a related field. Essential qualifications include proven experience in integrating, testing, operating, and commissioning silicon detectors and trackers for high-energy physics experiments, as well as developing testing procedures and DAQ or detector control software. Cleanroom assembly of sensitive equipment and prior particle detector operation in an experiment are advantageous. Strong English proficiency is required, along with a commitment to learn French.

What you'll do:
The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction and integration of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). The different parts of the ITk system are being constructed and integrated in institutes and then transported to CERN where the entire ITk will be assembled.

As an applied physicist or engineer in the CERN-ATL Team, you will join the Tracker section (EP-ATL-TRK) and work closely with the teams in the different institutes to synchronise the integration testing of the ATLAS ITk parts on surface, support their integration and commissioning into the ATLAS ITk and prepare the cavern commissioning.
