Click to Hire AB is seeking an **Embedded Software Integration Engineer** for a consulting assignment focused on building a next-generation software platform for machine electronic control units (ECUs). Working close to microcontrollers and hardware within a technical development team, the role involves developing, integrating, and maintaining low-level embedded software for real-time systems. Key responsibilities include working with bootloaders, startup code, device drivers, hardware abstraction layers, and an RTOS. The position also entails hands-on debugging, verification, and troubleshooting on target hardware using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debug probes to ensure deterministic and reliable system behavior. Candidates must have at least **8 years of professional experience** in embedded software development, including several years dedicated to low-level platform work. Decisive qualifications include strong **C++ programming skills**, experience using Python for scripting and automation, and a proven background with microcontrollers, bare-metal development or RTOS, memory management, and hardware-level troubleshooting. Meritorious qualifications include prior experience with automotive or safety-critical systems, ARM-based microcontrollers, CAN or CAN FD protocols, automotive diagnostics, functional safety, and modern CI/CD practices.
About the assignment
We are looking for an experienced Embedded Software Consultant to contribute to the development of a next-generation software platform for machine ECUs.
In this assignment, you will focus on low-level embedded software and platform development, working close to microcontrollers (MCUs) and hardware. You will join a technically strong development team developing robust, reliable and deterministic software for real-time systems.
This role is suitable for a senior embedded software engineer with strong expertise in C++, embedded platforms, hardware-level debugging and real-time software development.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, integrate and maintain low-level embedded software for ECU platforms.
- Work with microcontrollers, bootloaders, startup code, device drivers, hardware abstraction layers and RTOS.
- Analyze, troubleshoot and resolve complex hardware- and software-related issues.
- Perform hands-on debugging and verification on target hardware using debug probes, oscilloscopes and logic analyzers.
- Contribute to software architecture, implementation, integration and verification.
- Ensure reliable and deterministic software behavior in real-time environments.
- Collaborate with hardware and software engineers to resolve platform-level challenges.
Required qualifications
- Minimum 8 years of professional experience in embedded software development.
- Several years of hands-on experience in low-level embedded software and platform development.
- Strong knowledge of microcontrollers and embedded hardware.
- Experience with RTOS and/or bare-metal software development.
- Experience with bootloaders, startup code, memory management and hardware initialization.
- Good understanding of interrupts, real-time behavior and peripheral interfaces.
- Strong debugging and troubleshooting skills, including practical experience with target hardware and measurement equipment.
- Strong programming skills in C++ and experience with Python for scripting, automation and testing.
- Ability to analyze and solve complex hardware/software integration problems.
Meritorious qualifications
The following experience is considered an advantage:
- Experience in automotive or other safety-critical embedded systems.
- Experience with ARM-based microcontrollers.
- Knowledge of CAN, CAN FD and automotive diagnostics.
- Experience with functional safety.
- Familiarity with modern software development practices, continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD).
