Mechanical/Electromechanical Technician (ATLAS ITk Upgrade)
CERN · Tills vidare · Deadline 2026-11-29
CERN is recruiting a **Mechanical/Electromechanical Technician** for a 36-month, fully on-site contract starting around 1 January 2027. Based in the Engineering Office Section, the technician will contribute to the design and construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer Barrel for the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker. Core responsibilities include producing, testing, and installing Pixel Outer System services and support structures, supporting temporary test infrastructure, and carrying out hands-on detector integration in the SR1 cleanroom. The position also involves fabricating assembly tooling, assisting with installation and connections in the underground ATLAS cavern, and documenting manufacturing, installation, and quality control procedures. Working conditions require **work in radiation areas**, interventions in underground installations, shift work during nights, Sundays, or official holidays when necessary, and holding a valid driving licence. Candidates must hold a **higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience** in precision mechanics or a related field. Essential requirements include demonstrated experience in conventional and non-conventional precision machining of metallic and non-metallic parts, assembling complex high-precision mechanical systems, and manufacturing and installing cable bundles. Applicants also need proven expertise in structural joining techniques, especially adhesive bonding and orbital welding, alongside a solid grasp of mechanical and electrical drawings with geometric tolerances. Experience with CNC machines, CAD software (ideally Catia V5), and CAD-CAM programming (preferably WORKNC) is advantageous. Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is required, coupled with a commitment to learn the other language.
What you'll do:
The CERN ATLAS Team plays a major role in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). In particular, the CERN Detector Technologies (DT) team focuses on the realisation of the Pixel Outer Barrel for the ITk. Our activities include the design, prototyping and assembly of the support structures and tooling as well as the final detector integration, installation and testing. As a mechanical/electromechanical technician in the CERN-DT Team, you will join the Engineering Office Section (EP-DT-EO) and work closely with personnel from the ATLAS Group (EP-ATL) and the Technical Coordination Team of the ATLAS Experiment in the design and construction of the ATLAS ITk Pixel Outer Barrel.
Your responsibilities:
- Participate in the production, testing and installation of the Pixel Outer System services and their support structures (e.g. trolleys).
- Support the design, manufacturing and installation of temporary services and infrastructure for testing during the integration of the Pixel Detector.
- Participate hands-on in the integration of the Pixel Outer System and its insertion into ITk in the SR1 cleanroom, contributing to the development and fabrication of the corresponding tooling.
- Participate in the ITk installation in the ATLAS cavern, supporting preparation of Pixel services for installation as well as connections after insertion.
- Document manufacturing and installation procedures as well QC information of tools and production parts to ensure traceability.
Your profile:
- Demonstrated experience in conventional precision machining of metallic and non-metallic parts, using both conventional and non-conventional methods.
- Good understanding of mechanical and electrical drawings, including geometrical tolerance specifications.
- Demonstrated experience in the assembly of complex, high precision mechanical systems with high quality standards.
- Proven experience in manufacturing and installation of cable bundles and harnesses.
- Proven experience with of structural joining techniques, particularly adhesive bonding and orbital welding.
- Previous experience in computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines would be considered an asset.
- Experience in the use of CAD software (ideally Catia V5) for the 2D and 3D modelling would be considered an asset.
- Previous experience in CAD-CAM programming (preferably using WORKNC) would be considered an asset.
- Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Precision Mechanics or a related field.
Your skills:
- Manufacturing of mechanical parts.
- Knowledge and application of joining techniques, glueing, welding.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models (ISO dimensioning, tolerancing).
- Programming and use of CNC machine-tools and machining centres.
- Precision assembly of mechanical structures and equipment.
- Delivers high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations.
- Adapts quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements; works well in groups and readily fits into a team; participates fully and takes an active role in team activities. At the same time, works well autonomously, taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
- Adopts a pragmatic approach, understanding the value of adopting generic rather than 'gold -plated' technical solutions.
- Spoken and written English or French, with a commitment to learn the other language.
Employment conditions:
- A valid driving licence.
- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
