Embark Studios AB is looking for a **Tech Lead - Backend Delivery** to join its shared tech organization. In this position, the lead directs the technical execution of developer experience and reliability across a platform team that provides self-serve infrastructure, tooling, and multi-tenant clusters. Day-to-day responsibilities include **managerial responsibilities and mentoring**, such as hiring, onboarding, and career development, alongside setting technical direction for CI/CD, observability, mesh networking, and build pipelines. The role involves guiding architectural decisions, enhancing fleet monitoring, building automation to streamline development cycles, and collaborating across teams—including backend services, game server infrastructure, data analytics, and anti-cheat—using technologies such as Go, Python, GCP, Bazel, Terraform, Kubernetes, and Istio. Candidates should have a solid, proven background in **software engineering and architectural leadership**, specifically with experience developing large-scale systems. The role calls for experience working in a fast-paced engineering environment focused on continuous integration, scalability, and automation. Applicants must demonstrate strong leadership qualities, the ability to communicate trade-offs effectively with diverse internal partners, and professional English communication skills.
As the Technical Lead for the Backend Delivery team at Embark, you will work in the shared tech organization and lead the technical execution of reliability and developer experience. Backend Delivery is a platform team that serves other shared tech functions by building self-serve infrastructure, tooling, and managing our shared multi-tenant clusters. Some examples of things we’re working on include CI/CD, observability, mesh networking, build pipelines, etc. Some of the technologies we use to make all of those are Go, Python, GCP, Bazel, Terraform, Kubernetes, Istio.
You will mentor and guide engineers, collaborate closely with design and product, and make architectural decisions regarding the infrastructure and backend development platform.
In your day to day you work as an amplifier for cross team communication & collaboration.
Example of responsibilities: Leadership & Collaboration
- Managerial responsibilities (not limited to) hiring & onboarding of new employees and long-term career development.
- Serve the know-how & share best practices: coaching people to make the right decisions across dependencies and to raise concerns and needs.
- Collaborate with backend services teams, the game server infrastructure team and other users of the common development platform such as data analytics and anti-cheat to define, scope, and deliver new features and improvements.
- Planning and working for sustainability / scalability of team and throughput, including headcount planning and scoping.
Example of responsibilities: Architecture & Development
- Support the design and evolution of robust, scalable systems within backend engineering teams in the organization (e.g. player-progression, matchmaking, etc…)
- Ensure high performance and reliability by improving monitoring of our fleets
- Foster best practices in code quality, automated testing, performance profiling, and release reliability.
- Lower cognitive load by building tools and automation to make development iterations simpler and faster.
